Vividly I recall that unexpected phone call that awoke me in the middle of the night. It was just 4 days after my birthday, on March 7, 2006. My Dad had called me from the ER and only said for me to quickly get there. Although I prayed as I drove, with assurance that everything was okay, the moment I saw my Dad's face I knew that it wasn't. My little brother and only sibling, Corey, at the young age of 20, had passed away from a severe asthma attack.
In a cold and uninviting room in the ER labeled "chapel" is where my Dad and I both sat, crying. The room began to spin all around me and it felt as though all the blood had drained from my body. I dropped to my knees and prayed. But those prayers just turned into crying so uncontrollably for what seemed like a lifetime. However the crying completely stopped and Phillipians 4:7 was immediately spoken to me in my Spirit, followed by, "Corey is okay now Steph, do not worry for him".
God's word says that "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." I fully believe that God calmed me with this peace and gave me assurance for the questions to come in Corey's unexpected passing. I have held on to that special moment and encounter with God in the ER chapel; His peace is what I held on to through the passing of my baby brother and 5 years later, through the passing of my sweet Mother.
As believers, we are not given a special pass to use whenever we don't feel like going through difficult circumstances that life throws at us. BUT we are given so many promises and encouragement through God's word. Our Heavenly Father loves us so much that through our weakest, darkest moments; He is undeniably present, giving us peace beyond our understanding.
PRAYER: Father, thank you for your constant love and presence in our life. Let us not only find comfort and peace through your powerful word, but to also find opportunities to encourage others through our testimony. All glory and honor to You! In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.
