I have three boys who are just all boy. I’m talking about messy rooms, dirt on their shoes, food on their faces and clothes 24/7 kind of boys. When they were small I would sit and watch them acting like little daredevils jumping off the couch (there was no point in stopping them because it would just resume as soon as I left the room). So I would just sit and watch and comment on the height and distance they jumped. They like to play hard and have fun doing it. But as soon as bedtime rolled around it was a different story.
Their nightlights had to be working properly, all the shadows had to be inspected and I’d usually have to leave them whimpering, making sure to leave the door slightly cracked “just in case”. It was a nightly struggle to get them comfortable enough to go to sleep. I’d tell them, “Just say ‘Jesus’ and all the bad thoughts will go away.” When you’re an adult it seems easier to just speak to your fear and call it what it is, but to a small child that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. So we wrote verses on their walls as a constant reminder to seek Jesus in their fear.
Years have passed since those nights, they’ve gotten older and their faith has increased by experiencing exactly what Jesus can do. But they still find comfort in two very special verses that they have memorized over years of repeating them every night. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” This verse washes away the fear of the dark bed room. And also Proverbs 3:24 “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.” This verse allows hope to fill them up with the assurance of a good night’s sleep. And I’m positive these verses will never fail them as they continue to grow.
So, whether you have a fear of going to bed in the dark or just a fear of not being able to fall asleep with life pounding so hard on you from all angles, the word of God has a remedy for all of it. Just say, “Jesus” when you can’t think of anything else, there is a mighty power in His name that will change the atmosphere of your situation. Or pull out a scripture that speaks to your problem and proclaim it every day, or every hour if you need it. If you speak God’s word OVER your fear you’ll never find yourself UNDER its power.
ACTION: Write down a verse that can help your current situation, speak it aloud every day and watch as God moves through His word to change it around for your good.
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I proclaim Your word over my fears and doubts. I know Your word never fails, so I will stand on these promises and faithfully wait for Your hand to move my situation. I remember and praise You for every time You’ve held me through the struggles of my past and I claim victory over my future in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
